Made in Spain: Arturo Coello

INTRODUCTION:

Arturo Coello Manso was born in the town of Mojados, in the province of Valladolid, on 8 March 2002.

Sometimes they call him by one of his two nicknames: “El Rey Arturo” and “Arturito”.

He currently occupies the 2nd position (as of 16 May 2023) in the World Padel Tour ranking and, together with his court partner, Agustín Tapia, they form the best padel pairing in the world.

Undoubtedly, this is the couple to highlight at the beginning of this year 2023 and, surely, one of the couples chosen to dominate the professional circuit in the coming years.

EVOLUTION AND SPORTING CAREER – ARTURO COELLO

It was not until the age of 7 that Arturo took his first strokes in padel. At that time, this activity was also combined with tennis and football. Later, at the age of 10, as we already know, Arturo opted for padel, leaving aside the other activities, although without getting involved body and soul, as he continued to see padel as an activity he enjoyed and did it to have a good time.

Even so, Arturo Coello managed to stand out in the junior categories, achieving numerous achievements that indicated that one day he was going to be a great player.

ARTURO COELLO AT THE SPANISH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Finally, at the age of 16, Arturo Coello dedicated himself seriously to padel.

Arturo Coello first appeared in the World Padel Tour rankings in 2017 alongside Alberto Rea, but it wasn’t until 2019 when he started to climb the rankings playing with players like Pincho Fernandez, Fran Ramirez Navas and Guga Vazquez.

In 2020 he teamed up with Iván Ramírez, another young player with a lot of projection, and together they managed to attract attention and establish themselves as a couple to be feared in the final draws of that season. Their presence in the last 16 on numerous occasions did not go unnoticed by the public or the sport’s experts. He was just 18 years old, but he was already beginning to show signs of his enormous quality.

At the end of that great 2020, Arturo was elected “Revelation Player” by the Padel Spain media at the World Padel Awards.

Thanks to this remarkable irruption, Miguel Lamperti approached him to play for the beginning of the following season (2021). And it was with this Argentine legend when his talent really began to shine and surprise the padel world with outstanding performances.

Later he also played with Javi Ruiz, with whom he reached the semifinals at the Malaga Open, after defeating the world number ones, Juan Lebron and Alejandro Galan.

In September of that year, Coello had to change to change partners, due to Javi Ruiz’s injury, and play with Alejandro Arroyo, with whom he reached the semifinals of the Lugo Open, beating Lima and Tapia in the quarterfinals.

Little by little Arturo improved, becoming an increasingly mature and complete player. His repertoire of shots became wider and more varied. The Spanish national team chose him to play in the World Padel Championships in November, which he ended up winning, becoming world champion at the early age of 19.

That same year he managed to climb to 15th position in the ranking and enter the Barcelona Master with Javi Ruiz, a definitive step that consolidated him as one of the best.

At the end of the season, Arturo confirmed the separation as a couple with Javi Ruiz.

For the 2022 season, Arturo joined Fernando Belasteguín, the most successful player in history, who saw and decided to bet on a young Coello who was just starting to emerge on the big stages.

Together they started in the best possible way, winning their first World Padel Tour tournament in Miami, becoming the youngest player in history to do so at 19 years, 11 months and 19 days (coincidentally, the previous holder of this record was Agustín Tapia, his current partner, at 20 years, 1 month and 15 days and also with Belasteguín). A milestone that he would repeat later in Madrid and Amsterdam. In addition, they also won the Monterrey tournament of Premier Padel, closing a great season.

But when Arturo has really excelled has been this year 2023 along with Agustín Tapia.

THE AMAZING DUO! AGUSTIN TAPIA / ARTURO COELLO

At the beginning of this season they have overwhelmed everything in their path. No one has yet managed to beat them and their dominance seems unbreakable. Adding to Tapia’s talent and magic is the strength and power of Coello, and that has made them an extraordinary pair whose limits are unknow!

In this 2023 they have won everything. They have already won the first 7 tournaments of the year (Abu Dhabi Master, La Rioja Open, Chile Open, Paraguay Open, Granada Open, Brussels Open and Vigo Open), with 32 consecutive victories and only 3 sets lost, they are now at the top of the world ranking dethroning Lebron and Galan who had it for more than three years and being the youngest couple in the history of World Padel Tour to achieve it.

They have broken all the historical records for the start of a season in the modern era of padel. Furthermore, everything points to the fact that they will continue to increase that number throughout this year.

It’s a shame, therefore, that due to Arturo’s overload and not being able to play the Danish Padel Open (from the 17th to the 21st of May), Coello and Tapia will lose the number 1 position, a position they will have held for just a week.

We can’t wait to see them back on court!
